Chris Stone

Dr. Chris Stone is an experienced academic and qualified university educator in the tourism and hospitality management subject field, with 25+ years’ experience of teaching, research & publication, consultancy, and providing quality assurance in higher education.  Presently holding the position of Senior Lecturer in Tourism Management at Manchester Metropolitan University, he has a career record as External Examiner in the tourism and hospitality management subject field (2006-present; seven HE institutions in UK, Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean; at under- and postgraduate levels), and has conceived, validated, managed, and reviewed several degree programmes.  Chris is regularly consulted by the European Commission (assessor for FP6, FP7, and Horizon 2020 (‘FP8’); 2003-present) and EU member state governments on the allocation of public resources in tourism and related policy fields, and has been appointed tourism academic expert to assist the work of the Committee on Transport and Tourism of the European Parliament (2012-2014; reappointed 2016).  He formerly held the position of Managing Consultant with a UK-based company providing tourism consultancy services to a range of public, private and not-for-profit clients, has led tourism planning projects, and worked at the sharp end of the industry in the past!  With a PhD in tourism development and a background in environmental planning, Chris specialises in ‘sustainable’ and ‘responsible’ tourism and hospitality development philosophies, approaches, and management, and he researches and publishes in the field, chairs PhD examinations and supervises and examines postgraduate research students (PhD/MPhil, UK and overseas).  He is invited to speak at international conferences and on trade missions, and regularly reviews manuscripts for major academic journals (including Tourism Management – gained ‘Outstanding Reviewer’ 2015).  In 2017 he was appointed to judge the Sustainable Tourism Awards conferred annually by Skål International, the global tourism industry’s professional membership organization (serving 2017 and 2018).  Professional memberships and accreditations include Fellow, The Tourism Society; Chartered Scientist; Chartered Environmentalist; Fellow, the Institute of Place Management; Fellow, The Higher Education Academy; Member, the Institution of Environmental Sciences.  Country experience includes 35+ nations.
