Sofia Rebelo

Sofia first joined the Hospitality & Retailing subject group at Leeds Metropolitan University as a part-time lecturer in September 2006, while undertaking a Masters in International Hospitality Management. Since then she has completed this MSc and a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education.

Her first job as a graduate in Hotel Management, from Estoril, Portugal, was to be integrated into a project team which saw the implementation of the Institute for Tourism Studies (IFT), Macau where she was employed from December 1995 to September 2000.

She has also taken on managerial roles in a Relais & Chateaux property in Portugal Luxury country house hotels in England as well a period in Mallorca, Spain, in a leading international hotel Company

In May 2009 Sofia was appointed as a full time lecturer and took on the responsibility of all level 4 hospitality students. As of September 2010 she has been appointed as a senior lecturer and course leader for the newly launched BSc (Hons) Hospitality Leadership and Management. More recently has led the the UG curriculum review for the course and co-ordinates the international development of partnerships in Malaysia, Singapore. Macau, China and Turkey.  

The modules she teaches include; The Global Hospitality Industry,  Introduction to the Casino and  Gaming Industry, Consumer Behaviour and Marketing, The Hospitality Industry and Skills, Contemporary Industry Perspectives, as well as Continual Professional Development at various levels of study.

Her research includes studying the series of Assessment, Learning and Teaching strategies with which she has been involved with and highlights her work with first year students, incorporating industry relationships into the curricula, and in the field of Corporate Social Responsibility.

Sofia speaks five languages and being born in South Africa, where she lived until the age of 16 and with subsequent work experiences in Portugal, Macau, Spain and UK, as well as teaching in Denmark and India in the past 3 years, Sofia can truly be referred to as a “global citizen”.
